UNESCO
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation is a specialised agency of the United Nations which currently comprises 186 Member States, compared with 20 at the time of its formation in 1946. UNESCO was formed to keep a watchful eye on developments in the world and help Member States find answers to the key problems that beset our societies in the areas within its competence.
UNESCO's Constitution says that since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed. Building these defences through international co-operation remains UNESCO's prime objective.
UICEE
The UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education (UICEE), the world's only such centre for engineering education, is based in the Faculty of Engineering at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. The main objective of the Centre is to facilitate the transfer of information, expertise and research on engineering education and industrial training, with a specific mission to assist developing countries throughout the world.
ILG-EE
The International Liaison Group for Engineering Education (ILG-EE) is an independent working group, promoting international activities in the field of engineering education. The Group was established in 1989. It consists of over fifty outstanding international figures actively involved in engineering education and industrial training. The Secretariat of the ILG-EE is located in the UICEE.
RUCTA
The Research Unit on Cultures and Technologies in Asia (RUCTA), established in December 2001 by the Monash Asia Institute (MAI) and the UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education (UICEE), brings together expertise on Asia in five Faculties of Monash University: Arts, Business and Economics, Engineering, Law and Information Technology. Drawing on their global networks and partnerships, including FAO, UNESCO, various think tanks and international companies, the MAI and UICEE have agreed to work together for their mutual benefit in this joint research initiative.
FORUM CO-SPONSORS
Co-sponsors of the Forum include the International Liaison Group for Engineering Education (ILG-EE), Monash Asia Institute (MAI) and the UICEE Partner Institutions, including the following academic and industrial organisations:
THE FORUM
With the establishment of the Asia-Pacific Higher Education Network - Engineering Education (APHEN-EE) within the UICEE in 1994, it was essential to create a forum for engineering educators to discuss issues of innovation in engineering and technological education, not only by electronic means, but also in person. Therefore, the 1st Asia-Pacific Forum on Engineering and Technology Education was organised by UICEE between 6 and 9 July 1997 at Monash University. The Forum has generated an action-oriented agenda for the network.
The objective of the Forum is to bring together educators from the Asia-Pacific region to continue discussion about common issues in engineering and technology education; to discuss the need for innovation in engineering and technology education; and to foster the links, collaboration and friendships already established in the region; and to pursue the goals formulated in the action oriented agenda.
THE VENUE
It has been decided that the Menam Riverside Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand, will provide the venue for the Forum. The Forum Registration Package for non-Thai participants will include; a Forum Fee and heavily discounted hotel accommodation for five nights. The Forum Fee will cover Forum participation, proceedings, morning & afternoon teas, lunches, cocktail party, Forum Banquet and an exciting social program.
Accommodation will include a room with a double-bed (spouses are welcome), and American breakfast for one person. The total price of the Forum Package will be about $A1,250.
TOPICS
It is anticipated that proposed papers will present research findings describing the effectiveness of new approaches to engineering and technology education. Suggested topics for Forum papers include, but are not limited to, the following areas:
The needs of industry are of particular interest, especially as they relate to matters concerning methods and effectiveness of training in further and continuing engineering and technology education. The implementation of special collaborative programs, novel methods and innovative approaches to education are of particular relevance to the Forum.
CALL FOR PAPERS AND CONTRIBUTIONS
A call is made for papers, contributions and other Forum activities on the topics mentioned above or on any other topic and activity relevant to the Forum theme. Prospective authors should submit an abstract of 250-350 words, in English, outlining aims, content and conclusion of their papers, as well as other contributions. The abstract should include the title, author(s) name, affiliation, mailing address, telephone and fax numbers. Authors are asked to indicate the category into which their papers fall. Papers will be printed directly from the authors' typescripts. Papers must be presented by the author(s) personally and will not be published in the proceedings unless presented.
INVITED SPECIAL SESSIONS
A number of well-known experts, local and international, will be invited to address the Forum on key issues of engineering education. Sessions will be structured to encourage useful discussion, and it is intended that such discussion will be summarised towards the end of the Forum.
Proposals for arrangement of invited sessions are welcome. These sessions are expected to address topical issues on engineering. Each proposal should include the names and affiliations of authors and abstracts of their papers. Proposals are also invited for the organisation of panel discussion sessions. Each proposal should include the names and brief resumes of the panellists.
There is also room for innovative formats, permitting flexible arrangements for poster sessions, group discussion and interaction, demonstrations, etc. Any institution or individual interested in conducting such an activity should contact the Forum General Chairman.

Authors should note the following deadlines:
