Fluid Dynamics Research
At Monash:
With the largest wind tunnel in the southern hemisphere at our disposal, Monash continues to take the lead in fluid dynamics research. The wind tunnel allows detailed analysis of automobile design, environmental flows and integrity of bridges and buildings. Similar experiments for marine applications can be tested in our state-of-the-art wave tank.
The Australian synchrotron is also being used by Monash researchers to develop new imaging techniques for blood and lung flows at minute levels. It is hoped that one day such techniques could be used in the treatment of cancer and disease.
Other exciting areas include:
- Wakes and flow-induced vibration, bluff-body aerodynamics and vortex interactions
- Blood flow and vascular disease
- Applied research and development to improve fluid-dynamic processes for industry
- Turbulence, aerodynamics, flow control, propulsion and combustion
- Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flows, dynamics and structure of separated flows
- Fluid mechanics, rheology of complex fluids, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
- Turbulent flow topology, boundary layer flow, flow stability, high Reynolds number swirling flows, free surface flows
- Synchrotron-based in-vivo cardiovascular imaging and velocimetry, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) techniques, holographic PIV and image processing development
- Biological & biomedical engineering& imaging
- Aeroacoustics, turbomachinery, supersonic jets
- Simulation of three dimensional flows and non Newtonian fluid flows
