Higher Degree by Research Scholarships
As a leading teaching and research institution, Monash University attracts students of the highest calibre. In recognition of the important investment that students make in their education, we offer a range of scholarships to reward outstanding academic achievement.
The Faculty of Engineering is committed to offering scholarships to candidates who have outstanding results.
There are four categories of scholarships available:
- Scholarships managed by the Monash Institute of Graduate Research (MIGR)
- Scholarships awarded by the Faculty of Engineering
- Monash Institute of Medical Engineering (MIME)
- Externally funded scholarships
1. Scholarships managed by the Monash Institute of Graduate Research (MIGR)
The Monash Institute of Graduate Research manages two scholarship rounds each year.
- The Monash-wide selection round, opens on 1 June and closes on 31 October each year
- A second, annual mid-year round opens on 1 November and closes on 31 May
No late applications will be considered.
Tuition scholarships for international students include the cost of compulsory Overseas Student Health Cover. (Remember, the Research Training Scheme covers research course fees for Australian or New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents.)

2. Scholarships awarded by the Faculty of Engineering
The number of scholarships available varies each year. Most scholarships are awarded concurrently with those managed by MIGR and no separate application form is required. The Faculty will consider high calibre applications at any time of the year.
Academic staff within the Faculty of Engineering may also have funds available to support scholarships for higher degree by research students to undertake industry-oriented research projects.
The Faculty of Engineering scholarships are offered for full-time research students at a higher degree by research (HDR) level. PhD and Master’s by Research.
Awards are available for students who:
- are commencing their postgraduate research studies in the Faculty of Engineering at Monash University;
- have enrolled in a higher degree by research program ( PhD and Master’s by Research)
- hold H1 or H1 equivalent (H1E) academic qualifications; and
- meet Monash University’s minimum English language proficiency requirements for entry into a higher degree by research program.
Engineering Research Living Allowance (ERLA)
Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens are eligible to apply for living allowance scholarships (Engineering Research Living Allowance) as they are not required to pay fees under the Research Training Scheme (RTS).
The maximum duration of a full-time award is three years for PhD and two years for master’s studies.
The ERLA currently carries an annual stipend of $25,392 (2014 rate).
Faculty of Engineering International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (FEIPRS) (tuition fee scholarship)
The scholarship is provided to cover the tuition fees set by the Faculty of Engineering and payable by the awardee for each year of the course. The scholarship does not meet the cost of standard Overseas Student Health Cover for the awardee, their spouse and any dependants. Awardees are required to meet the cost of Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) themselves.
The maximum duration is three years for PhD or research professional doctorate studies and two years for master’s studies.

What happens if your application is not successful?
A university of our standing attracts a lot of interest from research students, and our scholarships are in great demand. If you were unlucky in your first application, don't worry – you have other options.
MIME PhD scholarships are available to support collaborative projects involving a clinician researcher from the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health, and a researcher from the Faculty of Engineering or Faculty of IT. 4. Externally funded scholarships
Other awards are available through schemes sponsored by the Australian government eg AusAID, by individual countries and by a range of organisations and donors. The Joint Academic Scholarship On-Line Network (JASON) , is a useful resource.
