Biomaterials for nerve tissue regeneration

Materials Engineering is currently collaborating with Biological Engineering and Stem Cell scientists at Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories (MISCL) to test specialised, biocompatible polymer meshes for nerve regeneration. Findings so far demonstrate that biodegradable polyesters are highly effective in encouraging 3D nerve cell outgrowth in vitro. This research is intended to have potential medical applications such as repair of spinal cord injury and peripheral nerve damage.
