National Railway Engineering Industry Award for Excellence in Railway Research
The 2002 Railway Engineering Industry Award was awarded to
the (BHP) Institute of Railway Technology at Monash University. The Institute
received this national award for Excellence in Railway Research.
The Railway Engineering Industry Award is a prestigious biennial Industry
award and it recognises achievements worthy of public recognition. It
was awarded at the Railway Technical Society of Australasia's (RTSA)
Conference on Railway Engineering 2002 (CORE2002) held from November 11
to 13, 2002 at Wollongong. The RTSA
is a technical society of The Institution of Engineers Australia.

The RTSA Biennial Industry Award for 2002, which is presented in recognition
of an achievement within the railway industry worthy of public recognition,.
goes to the BHP Institute of Railway Technology.
This Railway Technology Group was established 30 years ago as part of
the former BHP Melboume Research Laboratories. It is clearly a world class
research centre which has provided excellence in railway research for
BHP, other AustralIan raIlways and the intemational railway industry,
covering the whole range from heavy haul through light rail systems.
It has a universaI reputation for effectively solving railway related
problems in a range of disciplines with proven cost saving solutions being
developed. It has particularly excelled in the area of wheel/rail interface
issues, including development of improved rail profiles, with its solutions
having been adopted throughout the world. Its technological research has
enabled planned progressive increases in axle loads whilst effecting life
extensions of rail and rolling stock.
Through its experienced technical experts it has over its life published
over 1,000 technical reports and 130 technical papers.
The BHP Institute of Railway Technology is considered to have developed
to the stage where it is an internationally accepted one-stop technology
access point for applied railway research and technological development
for the Australasian and international railway industry.
