Women in Engineering

Some people think Engineering is all about men in hard hats and heavy machinery. Think again - because Engineering is no longer just a job for the boys!

Let’s start off by demolishing some of the stereotypes:

‘All engineers are men’

Not true. Many thousands of women are joining the ranks, and entering a career that  offers them a wealth of opportunities.

And they’re in demand. Women bring to the profession a range of communication and interpersonal skills, as well as different perspectives on technology that have not always been incorporated into mainstream Engineering thinking.

‘You have to wear a hard hat’

Well, you can if you want to. But the truth is, engineers work in lots of different places, from hospitals and research labs, to ‘regular’ business offices, to construction sites.

Some engineers may wear business suits every day, while others dress more casually. Some wear special clothes to protect them from hazardous chemicals.

And yes, engineers who work on construction sites wear hard hats and work boots – but not all the time!

‘You have to work with heavy machinery’

No you don’t. The old image of Engineering as strictly heavy industry is well and truly out of date.

6 reasons to choose Engineering

Women in Engineering?

In fact, the work of engineers is as broad and diverse as your imagination. To take just one example, researchers at Monash recently devised a way of preserving some of the earliest movies ever made by transferring information from rapidly decaying film reels to a digital format, without destroying the integrity of the original images. An imaginative, Engineering solution to a historical archives problem.

So turn your imagination into reality with a future in engineering, because at Monash, we know women make great engineers!
