Which program?
Bachelor of Engineering
The Bachelor of Engineering includes the common first year which lays a foundation in the basic sciences of mathematics, physics and chemistry.
The common first year introduces you to the different engineering disciplines you can choose to pursue
before you have to choose your specialisation. You learn to:
- apply your developing maths and science knowledge to real-life problems
- understand the interaction between engineering and society
- develop a range of common skills for the workplace, such as communication and report writing, teamwork, business enterprise, and quality and community consultation.
Over 40% of our Bachelor of Engineering students change their mind about which discipline they want to pursue between the time they commence their degree and the end of their first year.
The common first year means a change of heart does not have to mean a change of program. |

Specialist degrees
As the engineering field continues to grow and diversify, it’s just not possible to offer all our programs via the common first year. So if you already know exactly what you want to do, the specialist degrees we offer provide direct entry to the discipline of your choice.
You’ll find that you cover much of the same material as the students
in the Bachelor of Engineering course, particularly in your first year, but you’ll also be introduced to your chosen field of study at an early stage.

Double degrees
With just an extra year or two of undergraduate study, you can graduate with two degrees. Monash was one of the first universities to offer double degrees in response to the sweeping changes taking place in the modern workforce, and we remain committed to these programs. Almost 40 per cent of engineering students at Monash are enrolled in double degrees.
The benefits of a double degree are enormous:
- As the modern workforce becomes more complex, and traditional career paths change direction, an engineering double degree offers additional job options and flexibility.
- A double degree allows you to pursue careers in either area of study. Or you can take up one of the many opportunities emerging at the interface of disciplines, such as environmental advocacy, engineering marketing and communications, and the ethical application of technology.
- More and more employers are seeking engineering graduates who have expertise in cross-disciplinary fields, such as finance, management, sustainable development and professional ethics. And they are always impressed by the breadth of interests and grasp of ideas evident in Monash double degree graduates.
