Hemant Chaurasia

Monash University mechanical engineering student Hemant Chaurasia won first prize in the Australian final of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) “Speak out for Engineering” Competition 2007. The competition is for students studying Mechanical Engineering courses at Australian universities and young practising engineers.

“The competition requires entrants to communicate a technical subject in mechanical engineering to a general audience without technical backgrounds” says Hemant. “This is not an easy thing to do, and is judged on verbal and visual communication in describing and explaining technical subjects”.

The competition is designed to promote the importance of communication, particularly in the engineering field.

Hemant first won the Victorian final in the competition and then represented Victoria in the Australian final. He will now go on to represent Australia by competing in the regional final against Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Hemant says he was thrilled when he won first prize in the Australian final: “I really wasn’t expecting to win - it was such a welcome surprise”.
