Light metals enhanced with thermal processing28 September 2009The Light Metals Action Agenda set the tone for the aluminium industry back in October 2000. The Federal Government Agenda made clear that innovation and adaptation is vital for the industry to remain competitive internationally. That also means improving its energy efficiency and reducing its level of greenhouse gas emissions. The Australian aluminium industry is the single largest industry sector consumer of electricity, oil and natural gas. Dr Jian-Feng Nie and his team at Monash Engineering are working on new thermal processes to enhance the strength of aluminium and reduce energy requirements. The project has the potential to establish a platform for intelligent design and development of thermal processing technologies. With the subsequent improvement in mechanical properties, the Australian aluminium industry can look forward to growth in its international market share and a more sustainable energy landscape. |
