Engineers Without Borders Appropriate Technology Day28 September 2009
On the 10th of September 2009, the Monash Chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Australia, held an "Appropriate Technology Day" where they showcased some of the most time-saving, energy-saving and (in some cases) life-saving inventions that are being used by millions of people around the world. As the world undeniably changes around us, "appropriate technology" should be forming a greater part of our day-to-day lives and it is our responsibility as engineers to ensure that the appropriate technology is there when needed.
The day included a BBQ, raffle tickets and various events where EWB members and technology enthusiasts were able to discuss the latest developments in sustainability and on-going projects. Music on the day was played off an mp3 player with portable speakers that were powered by a battery and solar panel on site. Other main attractions included a hand powered rope pump, a water filter and our "bike riding competition".
In our bike riding competition, challengers battled it out to see who could generate the most power. Matt L. won the competition, producing a peak output of 1024W - enough power to drive 85 standard 12W compact fluorescent globes!
Thanks to the Bikery, Monash Sport and everyone that came down and enjoyed the fun. We hope to see you all at our next event!
