A team of Monash engineering students, who last month in Germany raced a car they designed and built, have returned from the international event with a respectable result.
The Monash team scored eighth place in the field of 41 competitors. The 10 Monash students who took part in the car performance races at the famous Hockenheim track were part of the larger Monash Formula SAE team consisting of 60 students from Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics and Aerospace Engineering.
The team leader in Germany, and one of the Monash drivers, was third-year Aerospace Engineering student Mr Andrew Brandt. He said their first foray in Germany inspired the group.
"We were rapt with the result overall," he said. "It was very good, considering we got rained on before the endurance section of the competition. Despite the wet track, we managed to post times that were only two seconds off the leaders," Mr Brandt said.
"We were well prepared as a racing team and we would love to compete again internationally, but at the end of the day it depends on finances and that depends on securing sponsorship," he said.
The Monash team won its berth in the German race after finishing as the best placed Victorian team and sixth overall in the Australian Formula SAE championships in December of last year. |
