Monash's Institute of Railway Technology (IRT) played a pivotal role, working closely with the Engineers Australia’s Railway Technical Society (RTSA), in the success of the recently held biennial International Conference on Railway Engineering 2006 (CORE2006). Ravi Ravitharan, from IRT, was Chair for the Conference and played a prime role in the organisation of the event.
The Conference was held at the magnificent Grand Hyatt Hotel in Melbourne on 30 April and 3 May 2006. This was the premier event in the 2006 railway engineering calendar. The only other international technical conferences in the railway industry that have a similar standing are the Heavy Haul conference and the Contact Mechanics and Wear of Rail/Wheel Systems which are held every four years in different parts of the world. Where the other two conferences concentrate on a special sector or discipline within the railway industry, CORE2006 is regarded as the pre-eminent international railway conference that covers all aspects of the industry.
The three major sponsors of the CORE2006 were: the Victorian State Government through the Department of Infrastructure, the Australian Rail Tack Corporation, and Thiess Pty Ltd. The 650 conference participants were railway professionals and engineers, and included all leading industry players such as CEOs, senior managers, railways professionals and engineers. Delegates came from as far afield as Brazil, Hong Kong, China, Iran, Singapore, New Zealand, Italy, United States, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Denmark and South Africa.
