Monash Plays a Pivotal Role in Organising Railway Conference

12 July 2006

Monash's Institute of Railway Technology (IRT) played a pivotal role, working closely with the Engineers Australia’s Railway Technical Society (RTSA), in the success of the recently held biennial International Conference on Railway Engineering 2006 (CORE2006). Ravi Ravitharan, from IRT, was Chair for the Conference and played a prime role in the organisation of the event.

The Conference was held at the magnificent Grand Hyatt Hotel in Melbourne on 30 April and 3 May 2006. This was the premier event in the 2006 railway engineering calendar. The only other international technical conferences in the railway industry that have a similar standing are the Heavy Haul conference and the Contact Mechanics and Wear of Rail/Wheel Systems which are held every four years in different parts of the world. Where the other two conferences concentrate on a special sector or discipline within the railway industry, CORE2006 is regarded as the pre-eminent international railway conference that covers all aspects of the industry.

The three major sponsors of the CORE2006 were: the Victorian State Government through the Department of Infrastructure, the Australian Rail Tack Corporation, and Thiess Pty Ltd. The 650 conference participants were railway professionals and engineers, and included all leading industry players such as CEOs, senior managers, railways professionals and engineers. Delegates came from as far afield as Brazil, Hong Kong, China, Iran, Singapore, New Zealand, Italy, United States, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Denmark and South Africa.

The theme of the Conference was Rail Achieving Growth and a total of 60 selected high quality peer-reviewed technical papers focusing on a range of railway related issues including Projects and Planning, Systems and Management, Safety and Risk Management, Track and Rail Maintenance, Vehicle and Wheel Maintenance, Vehicle-Track Interaction, Signalling, Rolling Stock, Locomotives and Condition Monitoring were presented at the conference. As Chair of the Conference, Ravi Ravitharan presided the plenary session on the first day and gave opening and welcome speeches. The keynote address was presented by the Hon Minister for Transport, Mt Peter Batchelor.

CORE2006 delegates were offered an insight into the railway infrastructure investments in Victoria, particularly in the Regional Fast Rail (RFR) and Spencer Street Station projects as well as the historic Castlemaine to Maldon railway system and various railway facilities and workshops in Melbourne and surrounding areas. In addition, they were treated to a most entertaining performance by James Morrison at the conference gala dinner.

Delegates have rated CORE2006 as the best ever railway conference held in Australia!
