Chemical Engineering excellence

4 October 2006

Professor Xiao Dong Chen of the Department of Chemical Engineering has been honoured for his research excellence in the area of food processing and chemical and biochemical engineering.

He received an award at Chemeca 2006, the Australasian Conference of Chemical Engineering, held in Auckland, New Zealand, on Thursday 21 September.

Professor Chen's prize, sponsored by New Zealand-based diary company Fonterra, recognises innovative thinking in biotechnology and food processing.

The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Tam Sridhar, congratulated Professor Chen on his achievement. "It is a wonderful achievement that brings honour, both to Professor Chen and to Monash," Professor Sridhar said.

Professor Chen's award was one of eight presented at the ceremony in recognition of excellence in the Australasian engineering community. The awards were also sponsored and supported by industry and the Engineers Australia Chemical College, the Institution of Chemical Engineers in Australia, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and the Society of Chemical Engineers New Zealand.

Fonterra's General Manager, Capital Projects, Mr Ross McCowan, who presented Professor Chen's award at Chemeca, said the company was proud to recognise his work.

"The company recognises the important role that leadership -- such as that exhibited by Professor Chen -- plays in the development of innovative technology that will ensure the sustainability of the dairy industry," Mr McCowan said. "We congratulate Professor Chen on his outstanding achievements."

The award was Professor Chen's second Chemica prize; in 1999, he won the young achiever award, the Shedden Uhde Medal.

Since joining Monash in April this year, Professor Chen has established a research team of five PhD students, and the group has helped establish important links between the university and Victorian food industries.
