The project focuses on the high-throughput screening of mammalian (stem) cell biomaterial surface interactions. The research will exploit cutting-edge surface engineering techniques as well as micro-printing techniques to generate libraries of chemical and biological surface modifications. This research will lead to advanced biomaterials for tissue engineering and stem cell technologies.

SEM SPECIALIST AND MATERIALS SCIENTIST

 

Industrial Research Ltd (IRL) is one of New Zealand’s leading scientific research organisations. A scientist with a specialty in SEM is required to join our dynamic Superconductivity team.

You will be the principle operator of our Leo SEM with EDAX. This can either be a part time or full time position. For the full time position responsibilities will include contributing to our wider materials science programmes in an experimentalist role. Major responsibilities include: acquiring SEM images from a variety of inorganic samples; performing elemental analysis; and performing basic instrument maintenance. The job requires interaction with a variety of commercial customers, accurate record keeping and preparation of written reports.

For the full time role the applicant will also be expected to have the skills to contribute more widely to materials science programmes. This may be through the use of other characterisation techniques such as AFM, optical microscopy and XRD analysis. The candidate would also be expected to contribute to sample preparation in our materials science programmes e.g. through thin film deposition or other techniques.

You will need familiarity with SEM equipment, methods and techniques. A degree in science or engineering and/or related field is essential and a masters degree is desirable. Proven experience in using SEM for materials characterization or failure analysis is necessary. Experience in metallurgy, ceramics, or superconductor materials would be an advantage. The work involves a high degree of independence in analysing and interpreting data and communicating results to customers and team members by oral and written reports.

There is a growing demand for device miniaturization for medical applications and modern industrial applications. Miniature 3D components (e.g. endoscope lenses), ranging from a few to a few hundreds of micrometres, are manufactured with high tolerances from a broad range of materials. At these small scales, however, little is known about material removal processes.  

We are looking for post-doctoral Research Associate who will study material removal mechanisms at micro/nano scales with particular emphasis on the wear mechanism and evaluation of microgrinding wheels.  

The project would involve modelling of deformation and removal mechanisms involved in nano/micro-indentation and single grit grinding. The models developed would be confirmed experimentally.  Applicants must have a PhD in a field relevant to tribology, materials engineering or physics.

Your primary responsibility is to provide metallographic support to the coated businesses in Australia and Asia. You will support research project work including organic and metallic coatings and iron and steelmaking research.

Further responsibilities include helping to maintain the metallographic preparation laboratory and optical microscopy facilities and maintaining a safe working environment for all users of the metallographic facilities.

Experience & Qualifications Required
To succeed you will preferably hold a metallurgy or materials related trade/certificate/diploma although training will be provided for the right applicant with any significant technical experience. This includes applicants with experience, but no formal qualifications, in metallurgy, materials science, industrial chemistry, boiler making, mechanical engineers etc.
One year metallographic or materials related laboratory experience will be beneficial.
As this is an entry level position a degree is not required and therefore will not be accepted.

You will also have good written, communication and negotiation skills and experience using the Microsoft Office Suite in particular Word and Excel.
