Advanced Light Alloys

The Research Program on Advanced Light Alloys in the Department of Materials Engineering at Monash University conducts internationally competitive research in four strategic areas: intelligent design and development of light alloys with higher performance, development of innovative processing technologies, nanostructural characterisation, and modelling and simulation of nanostructures and mechanical properties. The mission of the Program is to provide the best solutions to challenging problems arising from fundamental research and industry. The Advanced Light Alloys Group is a major contributor to research and development activities on light alloys in Australia. This Group is the host of a number of internationally recognised experts on light alloys, and has an outstanding record of research performance. It has been awarded many government and government-industry research grants over the past 10 years. Monash is the Administering Institution of a newly established ARC Centre of Excellence for Design in Light Metals and a major participant of a Cooperative Research Centre for Cast Metals Manufacturing (CAST). The ARC Centre operates on a budget of over $27.5m in 2005-2010. Supported by the Australian Federal Government, researcher providers and private sectors, CAST has combined commitment of more than $200m in 2005-2012.

The major research projects in this Group include:

  • design and development of high strength and creep-resistant magnesium alloy

  • development of novel processing technologies for higher performance

  • nanostructural characterisation using TEM and 3DAP

  • strengthening and creep mechanisms

  • formability and thermomechanical processing

  • severe plastic deformation and micro-forming of light alloys

  • effects of micro-alloying elements on precipitation behaviour in light alloys

  • clustering and aggregation in light alloys

  • modelling and simulation of microstructures
