Research DegreesPostgraduate projects range from fundamental topics, to many which involve collaboration and funding from industry and government. Many of the Departments' research staff are involved in Cooperative Research Centres - the main areas being the ARC Centre of Excellence in Light Metal Design, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science, the CRC for Polymers and the CRC for Cast Metals Manufacturing (Light Alloys). Areas of research strengths cover experimental, applied and theoretical physics and materials science and engineering. They include:
Nanotechnology in science and medicine, and bioengineering, are the future, and our research graduates are well placed for jobs in nanotechnology and bioengineering! More details on areas of interest can be found in Research Activities and Staff Profiles DEGREES OFFEREDThe Department of Materials Engineering offers the M.Eng.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees by research and major thesis. Within the Department of Materials Engineering all candidates for a higher degree who do not possess an Australian Master's degree by research, are required to enrol initially for a Master's degree. Candidates may transfer to PhD after successfully completing a 'transfer examination' (12 months after enrolment) with the date of commencement of studies backdated to the original date on which they started their research. Applicants must hold an Australian Honours degree or equivalent. APPLY TO THE DEPARTMENT FOR A POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP!A range of scholarships is available from Monash University and from Department of Materials Engineering. These are tax-free stipends which cover living expenses. For Australian citizens, most postgraduate courses are exempt from HECs fees. There are also scholarships available which pay course fees for international students. An Honours degree in Engineering or Science is required.
