Faculty of Engineering - 2008 Student Internet Reasonable Use Policy

During your studies you will be expected to make reasonable use of the Internet for research and communications with academic staff and other students.

Internet usage is not free. The Faculty will pay for reasonable Internet access as part of your educational programs. Some uses of the Internet result in very large financial charges to the Faculty and are clearly not part of your educational programs. Internet use which is not directly related to your studies is not permitted. This includes the following:

  • downloading or exchanging audio and video files including MP3 files and other similar files;
  • streaming (listening or watching) video and audio in real-time including Internet "radio/television" stations or music sites;
  • downloading entire WWW/FTP sites or significant parts of sites particularly those including images and games programs.

Internet access using your user ID which breaches this policy may result in you personally being charged for the cost of this access, and any additional administrative charges which may apply.  Please be aware that all internet usage from your own laptop connected to the Monash network is included in your usage.  As there is no automatic cut-off once your internet usage limit is reached, you are advised to check your usage regularly.  This can be viewed at: http://Mib.its.monash.edu.au

The Faculty currently accepts 1 GB (1,000,000,000 bytes) per semester as reasonable use. For the purpose of this policy, the semester periods have been determined as:

1st Period: 1 January to 30 June (billed in July)

2nd Period: 1 July – 31 December (billed in January)

Any usage exceeding 1 GB may be charged at the end of each semester.  Any unpaid debts will be recorded on your student record until payment is made.

All Internet transactions are recorded and can be traced to a particular user ID.

For this reason you must keep your user ID and password secure. If you have reason to believe that others may have obtained and could be using your user ID, then you must report it immediately to IT Services.  You may obtain a detailed report which details websites you have visited.  Details of this report are found at: http://www.its.monash.edu.au/staff/internet-billing/report.html

If your studies require you to access material not normally permitted under this policy, your supervisor/ lecturer must notify the Faculty Finance & Resources Manager.  In these cases the Faculty may recover the cost of this access from the appropriate project or grant account.

All users should be familiar with the University's policy on the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Facilities by Students, located at:
