Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. Do I have a choice to take up my UROP offer at a later date if I change my mind?

    Ans: If you decide to defer, you will have to re-apply at a later date.

  2. What happens if I find that the project is not the sort of project that I think it is – can I change my project?

    Ans: If you decide that the project is not what you think it is, discuss this with your supervisor first, and with the UROP coordinator before you make a decision to quit the project. Should you decide finally to change your project, you will have to re-apply at a later date.

  3. Can I apply for UROP a second time but for a different project?

    Ans: Yes, you can apply a second time to UROP; your application will be subject to the same selection process as the first time.

  4. What happens if I would like to continue with the project after one semester, do I have to go through the same application/selection process again?

    Ans: You should discuss this with your supervisor, and request to extend your involvement in the project. With the agreement of your supervisor and the UROP coordinator, you may only need to update your original proposal, and provide reason(s) for your extension request, and will not need to go through the same application/selection process again.

  5. What happens if I find that I can't adequately accommodate the UROP project with my academic work, can I request a Leave of Absence and put the UROP project on hold? What happens to the work I have done to date?

    Ans: Subject to the agreement of your supervisor and the UROP coordinator, he/she may agree to allow you to take leave from the UROP project for an agreed period of time, but your research may be continued through other members of the research group.

  6. Can my UROP work contribute to my postgraduate studies if I decide to continue with the project as my research topic?

    Ans:
     Your postgraduate work can certainly be a continuation of your UROP work, but your UROP duration will not be able to be counted towards your postgraduate candidature as this will commence only from the time of your enrolment in your postgraduate degree.

  7. Can I continue with my UROP project during the summer vacation?

    Ans: You may certainly continue with your UROP project during the summer break. In fact, you may wish to use the UROP project to apply for an Experience Research Program Summer Scholarship.

  8. Will I get paid for my participation in UROP?

    Ans: You will not receive any payment for your participation in UROP, but some funding will be made available for the purchase of consumables, small equipment and attendance at conferences.

  9. Will my participation in UROP in 2007 be recognised?

    Ans:
     Your participation in UROP 2007 will be separately acknowledged in written form, but no credit will accrue towards your formal degree studies.

  10. If I have any issues with my UROP experience, is there someone I can discuss these issues with?

    Ans: You should discuss if possible any issues with your supervisor in the first instance; if there are any issues with that, then you should seek to speak with the UROP Coordinator.
