UROP benefits
UROP offers students:
- a chance to engage in and understand the process and impact of cutting-edge research in a laboratory in an internationally renowned Engineering Faculty and a chance to make a difference;
- a taste of what real-life research is like, including the discipline of researching topics, developing and preparing research proposals, conducting experiments, performing modelling work (computer simulations), analysing data collected, discussing with experts the interpretation of data, deriving conclusions, and presenting the findings verbally at workshops/seminars/conferences, and in written form for conference and/or journal publications;
- a chance to learn and develop skills in laboratory techniques and experimental design;
- a chance to work in and explore a topic that interests you and/or a chance to investigate selected research topics and learn what interests you;
- an opportunity to work alongside experienced research staff and postgraduate students;
- an opportunity to network with industry, researchers, and academe, whether in a laboratory, a seminar, a conference, or just a social gathering;
- an insight into yourself as to whether you would like to proceed to postgraduate studies, and whether you would like to do it by research or by coursework; and
- of course, an improved CV and a successful application to Monash University to undertake postgraduate research studies!
In addition, you will participate in the UROP Induction Program; a seminar series on research topics such as research methodology, critical analysis; other research seminars in the Faculty; and associated social programs. Opportunities will also be provided to UROP participants to attend conferences to present papers/posters etc.
There will be excitement in discovery and disappointments in failures in the foray into UROP; but most importantly, there will be a gradual learning that these are all part in the life of a researcher. |
