Current Research and Professional Interests
- Aggregation and aggregate characterization: Understanding of mechanisms, hydrodynamic behaviour, micro-properties, and implications to macro-properties, e.g. dewatering behaviour, sediment compaction, filtration performance. The use of different characterization tools, including light scattering/obscuration methods, image analysis, tomography; applications of tools and knowledge on water treatments, mechanical bioseparation, use of personal care products.
- Simulation and modeling: Integration of 3D imaging and modeling tools; correlation to quantify relative aggregate strength from process conditions; predictions of system performance from micro-properties.
- Magnetic nanoparticles: Photocatalytic applications to detoxify harmful organic matters; including organochloride pesticide, polyaromatic hydrocarbon, and trihalomethane. Functionalisation of nano-sized magnetite to isolate specific proteins, e.g. BSA, peptide; enzyme immobilisation.
- Acid mine drainage: Iron hydroxide precipitation mechanisms; sludge conditioning procedures and densification.
