Chemical Engineering Experience Program

Day 1

Welcome Lecture

  • Chemical Engineering as a branch of engineering and science
  • Chemical Engineering as a career

Chemical engineering design competition

The design and operation of a chemical plant requires technical expertise but also requires an understanding of the economic and marketing considerations. Making large quantities of a product very efficiently may be useless if there is little market for your product.

This design game simulates 4 to 5 "companies" all making the same product and competing for a defined market. Each company can change the size of their plant each year to make more or less product at a cost to the company. The companies’ cumulative profit over five years is calculated according to the rules governing the behaviour of the market as influenced by the competing operations of all other companies. The company returning the largest cumulative profit win. Companies returning a loss are declared bankrupt and are eliminated from the competition.

Industry Site Visit (subject to change)

Carlton and United Breweries

Abbotsford Brewery in Melbourne is Australasia's largest brewery and also single largest beverage manufacturing operation. As you walk around the sites, you will be surprised by the complexity and scale; one of the main roles of Chemical Engineers is to design such process plants.

Huntsman Chemicals

You will learn how polystyrene is manufactured industrially. An overview of the chemical reactions, equipment required, and the important environmental considerations will be provided.
